From 16-22 June 2025, we mark World Incontinence Week.  A time to raise awareness, share resources and most importantly, break the silence around a health issue that affects millions. This year, we’re shining a light on something that needs changing: the stigma surrounding incontinence.

Why the Silence?

Incontinence is incredibly common. It’s estimated that over 1 in 4 Australians will experience some form of incontinence in their lifetime. It can affect people of all ages and backgrounds, including young children, new mums, elite athletes, people with disabilities and older adults alike.

Yet despite how common it is, many people still feel embarrassed to talk about it. That silence can lead to isolation, shame and a delay in getting support. At Conni, we believe it's time to rewrite the narrative.

What Does Stigma Look Like?

Stigma can show up in subtle ways:

  • Feeling embarrassed to ask for help
  • Avoiding social outings in case of leaks
  • Hesitating to use the word “incontinence” at all
  • Using makeshift solutions like towels or toilet paper instead of incontinence products, out of fear of judgment or shame

The truth is, managing incontinence shouldn’t be a source of shame. It's a health issue, just like wearing glasses, using a walking stick, or managing allergies.

Let’s Normalise the Conversation

Breaking the stigma doesn’t mean you have to tell the world your personal story (unless you want to!). It means recognising that incontinence is nothing to be ashamed of, and giving others the same grace and understanding.

Here’s how we can all help:

  • Use accurate and respectful language. Say “incontinence” or “voids”.
  • Share stories. If you're comfortable, share your journey - it might help someone else feel less alone.
  • Talk to your GP or continence nurse. Early intervention can make a huge difference.
  • Support others without judgment. A kind word or a practical suggestion can go a long way.

FAQ

Is incontinence just a normal part of ageing?

Not exactly. While ageing can increase the likelihood, incontinence is not inevitable and can affect people of any age. Many types of incontinence are treatable with the right support.

Is it okay to talk to my doctor about incontinence?

Yes! Healthcare professionals are trained to help. Start the conversation. It’s the first step toward feeling more in control.

Where can I go for extra help?

You can visit Continence Health Australia for resources and support, or speak to a qualified continence nurse.
